AMERICAN BACH SOLOISTS
Henry I. Goldberg International Young Artists Competition for Baroque Violinists
at the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition – June 5 and 8, 2008 – Berkeley, California

1st Prize $3,000 and engagements to perform as soloist with American Bach Soloists
2nd Prize $2,000 – 3rd Prize $1,000

COMPETITION GUIDELINES:
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED REPERTOIRE, AND APPLICATION FORM

QUALIFICATIONS:

Round One

  • Applicants must be born after June 8th, 1976. Proof of birth date is required (see application form).
  • Applicants must not have performed previously as an advertised, featured soloist with American Bach Soloists.
  • Applicants must submit an absolutely unedited digital recording of specific repertoire according to the detail below. Recordings will be accepted on compact disc only (audio CD, wave files, or mp3s) and must be delivered to our offices by April 1, 2008.
  • Recordings must be submitted with a completed application form, photo, resume, proof of birth date, and non-refundable $35 application fee.

 

Round Two
(SEMI-FINALS)

  • Semi-finalists will be notified of their selection by May 1, 2008.
  • All semi-finalists will receive a $500 travel stipend at the conclusion of their performance(s) during the competition. Semi-finalists are therefore responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from Berkeley
  • Semi-finalists must arrive in Berkeley by June 3, 2008. Hosted housing will be provided, if requested.
  • Rehearsals for the semi-finals will take place in Berkeley on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, and Thursday, June 5, 2008.
  • Semi-finalists will compete on Thursday, June 5, 2008, at 5:00 p.m., in Hertz Hall on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Semi-finalists must perform specific repertoire according to the detail below, and be available to remain in Berkeley through the evening of June 8, 2008.
  • Semi-finalists must not be otherwise engaged during the period of the competition, June 4-8, 2008.
  • Three finalists will be selected at the conclusion of the semi-finals round.

 

Round Three
(FINALS)

  • Rehearsals for the finals will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2008.
  • Finalists will compete on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at 3:00 p.m., in Hertz Hall on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Finalists will perform specific repertoire according to the detail below.
  • All finalists will receive a cash prize. 1st prize $3,000 and performances with American Bach Soloists; 2nd prize $2,000; 3rd prize $1,000. In the case of a tie for any prize, the judges reserve the right to redistribute the amounts of cash awards.

Chamber Music
Thursday, June 5, 2008, 5:00pm ¾ Hertz hall, University of California, Berkeley
Live performance with American Bach Soloists at the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition

Semi-finalists will have 20 minutes to present a program of their choosing that best demonstrates their levels of technical mastery, interpretation, and musicality. Their repertory selections must include at least one slow and one fast movement from Bach’s six Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord (BWV 1014-1019), plus any work for violin and continuo by a Baroque composer of their choice. Each semi-finalist must inform American Bach Soloists of their repertory choices and provide music for works other than the six Bach Sonatas mentioned above, by May 15th, 2008.

Round Three
(FINALS)

Concerto & Solo Repertory
Sunday, June 8, 2008, 3:00pm ¾ Hertz hall, University of California, Berkeley
Live performance with American Bach Soloists at the Berkeley Festival

Each finalist will perform selections from the following:
Concerto in A Minor for Violin, Strings and Basso continuo, BWV 1041
Concerto in E Major for Violin, Strings and Basso continuo, BWV 1042
Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major for Violin, Recorders, Strings and Basso continuo, BWV 1049
AND selections (chosen by the judges) from any one Solo Sonata or Solo Partita (BWV 1001-1006) chosen by the finalist.
