SAM SMITH (tenor) sings with the Choir of Men and Boys at Grace Cathedral, and with Schola Cantorum San Francisco, on whose board of directors he serves as president. He has sung with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Chorale, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, Artists' Vocal Ensemble (AVE), Pacific Collegium, St. Ann's Chapel Choir, California Bach Society, Stanford University's Early Music Singers, and San Francisco Renaissance Voices, of which he was founding co-director. He has appeared with the Kronos Quartet, the Tallis Scholars, the Mark Morris Dance Group and Berkeley Symphony Orchestra at Cal Performances, the New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Marin and Oakland East Bay symphonies, and in the American premiere of Striggio’s Mass for Five Choirs at the Berkeley Festival & Exhibition.  Mr. Smith has sung in master classes for David Hill and the Orlando Consort.  He has performed as tenor or violist in diverse venues, ranging from Westminster Abbey to San Quentin State Prison, from the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion to Carnegie Hall, from the Shrine Auditorium to Notre Dame de Paris, and from New Dramatists’ Workshop to Chartres Cathedral.  Sam studied viola at the R. D. Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, where he participated in master classes with Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Josef Gingold, Sir Neville Mariner, Iona Brown, and Donald McInnes.  A duet in the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s world premiere of Luciano Berio’s Duetti for Two Violins, the composer conducting, was a highlight of his early musical development.  His later teachers were Alan Deveritch and Benjamin Simon.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in classics and history from the University of Southern California and furthered his studies with an M. Phil. in classics at King's College, Cambridge.   He has played in the USC Symphony, the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra, and the Stanford University Chamber Orchestra. More recently, he formed the piano quartet for the world premiere by San Francisco’s Crowded Fire Theater Company of playwright Liz Duffy Adam’s musical, One Big Lie. Sam now performs regularly with several chamber music groups, including the Wolf Gang and the Capricollis String Quartet, which he co-founded.
