PETER NOWLEN (horn) is a Pi Kappa Lambda graduate of Northwestern University. He joined the Sacramento Symphony horn section in 1987, the UC Davis faculty in 1988, and the CSU Sacramento faculty in 1990. Recently he has served as principal horn of the Sacramento Chamber Orchestra, the Sacramento Opera, the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, the Music In the Mountains Festival and of the Orchestra Internazionale di Italia, performing in many of Italy's finest theaters and festivals and recording for the Alfa Records label. In 1992 Peter was third prize winner of the International Competition for Solo Horn of the Castle of Duino, Italy and in 1994 was a semi-finalist in the prestigious American Horn Competition. His solo appearances have included both American and Italian orchestras. In 1993 he premiered Leo Eylar's The Temptation of St. Anthony for horn and orchestra, composed for him. An active chamber musician and recitalist, Peter has given such performances throughout the western States and in Italy. As a member of the Empyrean Ensemble, he has performed, premiered, conducted and recorded works of many of today's leading composers. Formerly a member of Ralph Shapey's University of Chicago Contemporary Chamber Players, he has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet Orchestras, Earplay, the Chamber Music Society of Sacramento, and with UC Davis and CSUS faculty ensembles.
