JULIE JEFFREY (viol) began her musical career while pursuing graduate studies in musicology at the University of Chicago. She served as Assistant Director of the University of Chicago Collegium Musicum under Howard Mayer Brown and Mary Springfels, and performed extensively in the greater Chicago area. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has played with early music ensembles such as Magnificat Baroque Orchestra, the Newberry Consort, Ensemble Sans Souci, and Flauti Diversi, and with Celtic and traditional groups such as Distant Oaks and Musica Lyra. She has appeared at the Carmel Bach Festival, the California Shakespeare Festival, the San Francisco Early Music Festival, the Regensburg Tage Alter Musik, and the Melbourne Autumn Music Festival. Ms. Jeffrey is a member of Sex Chordae Consort of Viols, whose performances and recordings on the Centaur label have received critical acclaim. She has also recorded on the Harmonia Mundi, Northern Wind, MainSound and Classic Digital labels. Devoted to the promotion of viol playing at all levels, Ms. Jeffrey teaches privately, coaches at workshops, and has served as president and music coordinator of the Viola da Gamba Society/Pacifica Chapter, which she co-founded in 1988.
