JENNIFER HINES (mezzo-soprano)—recently lauded by Opera News for her "rich, dark mezzo" and "... a voice so rich and colored that she easily steals any scene in which she appears" (Time Off)—made her Metropolitan Opera debut as Fourth Naked Virgin and as alto soloist in Moses und Aron with Maestro James Levine conducting. Since her debut she has maintained an active relationship with the celebrated company, participating in its Ring Cycle in the 2004-05 season. She made her recording debut in the title role of Astor Piazzola's Maria de Buenos Aires, Murry Sidlin conducting, recently released on the Koch label.

Jennifer Hines debuts with Portland Opera in the 2007-08 season as Bertarido in Rodelinda, performs as soloist in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the National Philharmonic, in the Christmas Oratorio with the Washington Bach Consort, Messiah with American Bach Soloists, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with Green Bay Symphony, and in Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Cathedral Choral Society.

Ms. Hines' 2006-07 season engagements included performances of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with Opera Grand Rapids and Nashville Opera; excerpts of Maria de Buenos Aires in concert with Third Angle New Music Ensemble in Portland, Oregon; and the Page in Salome conducted by Leonard Slatkin with the National Symphony Orchestra. She appeared as soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in a return to the Richmond Symphony, Rossini's Petite messe solenelle with the Southwest Festival of Song, and St. Luke Passion (attributed to J. S. Bach) with the Washington Bach Consort. In addition, Ms. Hines was on the roster of the Metropolitan Opera. In the summer of 2007 Jennifer Hines performed Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Rossen Milanov, at the Mann Music Center and at the Bravo! Festival in Vail. She sang the title role of Maria de Buenos Aires, Murry Sidlin conducting, and performed Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, David Zinman conducting, at the Aspen Music Festival. Also under Murry Sidlin, she performed as soloist in Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 at the Cascade Festival of Music.

Recent season highlights include her debut with Washington National Opera as Flosshilde in Das Rheingold; performances in the title role of Carmen with the East Texas Opera, also with the New Jersey Philharmonic; as soloist in Messiah with New Mexico Symphony Orchestra; and in Mozart's Requiem with the Richmond Symphony. She has performed the role of Suzuki in Madama Butterfly with New York City Opera, Opera Tampa, Dicapo Opera, Opera Longview, the Eastern Music Festival, conducted by George Manahan, and with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. She performed the role of Carilda in Arianna in Creta in her debut with Gotham Chamber Opera, directed by Christopher Alden. She gave her first performances of Handel's Messiah with the New Choral Society and the Pacific Symphony. Ms. Hines made her Seattle Opera debut as Flosshilde and Rossweisse in Wagner's Ring Cycle.

Other career highlights for Ms. Hines include the American premiere of Philip Glass' White Raven with the Lincoln Center Festival and appearances with the Aspen Opera Theatre Center as Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream and in the role of Gertie in the American stage premiere of John Caskens's Golem. She has also sung Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream with Florentine Opera and the title role in Carmen with Longview Opera, Annapolis Opera and West Bay Opera. In addition, she has sung Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Olga in Eugene Onegin with Opera Festival of New Jersey, Mercedes in Carmen with Florentine Opera, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Tokyo, Japan. Ms. Hines was also a featured artist at the Marlboro Music Festival collaborating with esteemed pianists, Ken Noda and Mitsuko Uchida.

Ms. Hines has had a long association with the New York City Opera dating from the fall of 1999. She has become an integral part of the company singing roles that include Mercedes in Carmen, the Second and Third Ladies in Die Zauberflöte, Princess Nicolette in The Love for Three Oranges, and the Siren in Rinaldo, with Harry Bicket conducting.

Jennifer Hines is a native of Long Island and holds both Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School. She is a former Apprentice Artist with Santa Fe Opera, Tanglewood Music Center participant, and member of Seattle Opera's Young Artist Program.
